A young Nigerian talking to the Undergraduates

 To the Undergraduates

“Woe be unto that Nigerian Undergraduate, who has no skill, no Godfather no money and just graduated from the university” you go see pepper, better learn a skill.

Shortly after my BA Defense, I was very happy how everything went and how Impressed my external moderator was hearing me speak about radical life extension, which was adopted  in the academic field in 2017 in USA and having written on a female 21st century philosopher. I stand to be corrected; I was the first to write on futurism in Nigeria {winks}.

Actually after the defense and graduation, I was very happy owning to the fact that, I graduated from one of the best institute in Africa {Claretian University of Nigeria}, ask me why inbox .

Been an Igbo boy, I detest idleness and due to my love for money and business, I didn’t want to waste a day at home.

I applied to work in a hotel {Name withheld}, I went for an interview, having prepared very well and having studied philosophy, of course to speak or what to say wasn’t my problem, so I received congratulations and you can assume your position as a porter ASAP.

Been a young graduate, I was so happy, just a week after graduation, I have secured a job, why are people complaining about no job, mtchew lazy youths in Bubu voice?

My first day at work, I was told by my coworker that  I will be working for straight four days and nights, feeding from my pocket and transporting myself, paying for whatever that gets spoilt or stolen,  if there is any shortage, as if this things wasn’t enough, the Salary is just 20,000 per month.

To cut the long story short, I resigned the next day, having stood up and walking about for 24 hrs with sleepless night and shouting yes ma/sir.

If you will agree with me, you will notice that, the minimum food you can eat in a very local restaurant is 500 naira {not upto 1 dollar}.

Transportation per going is 600 a week  1800

Feeding {per meal 500} two times a day 1000 x 7 = 7000 x 4 24000

To sub your phone, per month is 1000, but now monthly sub is just for a day,

Utility bill ……..

Should I continue?..

Now as an undergraduate, is this what you want after graduation?

To the undergraduate, this my story is similar to the one of every young graduate in Nigeria without any backup or godfather, That’s for a graduation (B.A and OND holder that I am with web developing and graphics skill).

While in school, learn a digital skill, learn programming, graphics, web development, content creating, forex, crypto trading, digital marketing or any other skill you feel like to acquire.

Make good relationship with your course mates, you won’t see some again ever in your life, some will be your lather while you are rising, some will turn into family, of course enemies aren’t exempted.

The steady inflation in Nigeria doesn’t affect the minimum wage and salary of workers.

Even if you get a job of 40,000 per month, your savings won’t be up to 5k per month, except you don’t pay any fee {transportation, feeding, utility bills, data subscription, and others}.

Your degree is just equal to nothing in Nigeria without a silver spoon, so if your highest asset is just a degree, think again.

Should I tell you what happened next?

Of course I will, let me take my glass of wine.

To be continued …..
